Technical Information

A few knowledgeable companies may host on Linux or BSD. This is a step closer to better performance when used properly; however, they can make mistakes with Linux and BSD. Here are a few key points they often miss:

-They use the default Linux or BSD kernel. This is bulky and uses a larger chunk of memory. We compile a tidy kernel to use less space in memory.

-They forget to clean up the system services, and leave many unused programs running in the background. It wastes memory and CPU resources. We clean out all the unnecessary services to reduce the memory and CPU resource overhead.

-They use poor Linux binary emulation on BSD operating systems, resulting in poor performance, unstable FPS, and sometimes false FPS reporting. We use Linux that natively runs HLDS/SRCDS so emulation isn't as much of a deterring factor.

-They use the wrong OS architecture for their hardware. Example: 32bit OS on 64bit hardware. Results in poor hardware performance are limited by the OS, and the kernel's ability. We always match the OS architecture to the hardware for the best OS to hardware performance.

-They use poor drive optimization which causes a slowdown in the OS with simple read/writes for logging, map changes, or game server restarts. We separate the OS drive from the game server drives, and utilize RAM disks. This reduces the amount of overhead needed by common game server files by sharing them amongst the servers.

The rest of the industry rely on bulky control panels which often require a server side client or Apache/PHP/MySQL to be running along side the game servers to function. Some of the extreme cases are providers who use Plesk, CPanel or Webmin/Usermin plugins to run their servers. We believe in simplicity to cut down on the overall demand of CPU or memory usage so we utilize SNMP for server monitoring and a very small open source client to control servers remotely. All these features allow us to give you the best quality servers, at the most competitive prices.
